EMR and ESD
Also called Endoscopic mucosal resection, Endoscopic submucosal dissection
Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) remove large or flat polyps and some early cancers from the lining of the oesophagus, stomach or colon using an endoscope. They can avoid major surgery when the growth has not spread deeper.
At a glance
- Sedation
- Sedation or general anaesthesia
- Stay
- Day care or short stay, depending on size
What it involves
EMR lifts and snares the lesion; ESD dissects it out in one piece, which allows more precise laboratory assessment of larger lesions.
Your consultation and follow-up are at the clinic. This procedure needs specialised equipment, so the clinic will tell you where it is scheduled when you book.
When it is recommended
- Large or flat polyps
- Selected early cancers of the oesophagus, stomach or colon
Questions patients ask
Can an early cancer really be removed without surgery?
Some can, if tests show it is confined to the surface layers. Dr. Mannava will explain whether endoscopic removal is suitable after evaluation.
