Liver clinic
The liver clinic at Elite Gastro and Liver Clinic, led by hepatologist Dr. Anil Kumar Mannava, assesses and treats fatty liver, hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis and jaundice. Care covers diagnosis, scarring assessment, treatment of the cause, prevention of complications and regular follow-up.
Many liver diseases cause no symptoms until they are advanced. Early assessment, often prompted by an abnormal blood test or a 'fatty liver' line on an ultrasound report, gives the best chance of stopping progression.
Dr. Mannava has co-led clinical trials of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and NASH treatments and has written on acute liver failure and kidney problems in chronic liver disease.
How care works
- Find the cause. Blood tests, ultrasound and viral markers to identify why the liver is affected.
- Measure the damage. Assessment of liver scarring guides how closely you need to be followed.
- Treat and prevent. Antivirals, lifestyle and medicine plans, and endoscopic treatment of varices.
- Follow up. Regular review, including six-monthly cancer screening in cirrhosis.
Related conditions
- Fatty liver diseaseFat in the liver, often found on a routine scan, linked to weight, diabetes and cholesterol.
- Hepatitis B and CViral infections of the liver that are treatable, and in the case of hepatitis C, curable.
- Liver cirrhosisAdvanced scarring of the liver from long-term damage, which needs regular specialist care.
- JaundiceYellow eyes and skin, a sign of a liver or bile duct problem that needs prompt assessment.
Procedures
- Ascitic fluid removalUltrasound-guided drainage of fluid from the abdomen to relieve swelling and find its cause.
- Endoscopic variceal bandingSmall elastic bands placed on swollen veins in the food pipe to stop or prevent bleeding in liver disease.
- Upper GI endoscopyA camera look at the food pipe, stomach and duodenum, with biopsy or treatment in the same sitting.
Questions patients ask
Can liver problems be detected early?
Yes. Routine blood tests and ultrasound often pick up liver disease before symptoms appear. If you have diabetes, obesity, regular alcohol use or hepatitis in the family, ask for a liver check.
Do you perform liver transplants?
No. The clinic manages liver disease and, when transplant is needed, refers patients to a transplant centre and continues to support their care.
