Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
Also called EUS, EUS-FNA, EUS-FNB
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) uses a small ultrasound probe on the tip of an endoscope to take close, detailed images of the pancreas, bile ducts, liver and gut wall from inside the body. It also allows fine-needle sampling (EUS-FNA) and, in interventional EUS, drainage procedures that avoid surgery.

- Typical duration
- 30–60 minutes

- Yes
- Fasting
- About 6 hours
What it involves
Because the probe sits right next to the organ, EUS shows small stones, cysts and tumours that CT or ordinary ultrasound can miss.
Interventional biliary and pancreatic EUS is one of Dr. Mannava's areas of special interest.
Your consultation and follow-up are at the clinic. This procedure needs specialised equipment, so the clinic will tell you where it is scheduled when you book.
When it is recommended
- Pancreatic cysts, masses or chronic pancreatitis
- Suspected small bile duct stones
- Staging of oesophageal, stomach or pancreatic cancer
- Lumps under the lining of the stomach or oesophagus
Questions patients ask
How is EUS different from a normal ultrasound scan?
A normal scan images through the skin and belly wall. EUS images from inside the stomach or duodenum, right next to the pancreas and bile ducts, so the pictures are far more detailed.
