Ascitic fluid removal

Also called Paracentesis, Abdominal tapping

Paracentesis removes excess fluid (ascites) from the abdomen through a fine needle or catheter. At Elite Gastro and Liver Clinic it is done under local anaesthesia with ultrasound guidance to relieve swelling and breathlessness, and to test the fluid for infection or other causes.

What it involves

Ascites is most often caused by cirrhosis, but heart, kidney and other conditions can cause it too. Testing the fluid helps confirm the cause and rule out infection.

When it is recommended

  • Tense or uncomfortable abdominal swelling
  • New ascites needing diagnosis
  • Suspected fluid infection

Questions patients ask

Will the fluid come back?

It can, if the underlying cause continues. Treatment of the liver disease, a low-salt diet and medicines help reduce how often drainage is needed.
