24-hour pH impedance monitoring
Also called pH study, Reflux monitoring
24-hour pH impedance monitoring measures how often acid and non-acid fluid flows back into the food pipe over a full day. A thin catheter records reflux while you eat and move normally. It confirms GERD when symptoms are unclear or medicines have not worked, and guides further treatment.

- Duration
- 24 hours, at home

When it is recommended
- Reflux symptoms not responding to medicine
- Chronic cough or throat symptoms suspected to be reflux
- Assessment before anti-reflux surgery or procedures
Questions patients ask
Can I eat normally during the test?
Yes. You are asked to eat, work and sleep as usual, and to note meals and symptoms, so the test reflects a normal day.
