POEM for achalasia
Also called Peroral endoscopic myotomy, Third-space endoscopy
POEM (peroral endoscopic myotomy) treats achalasia, a condition in which the lower food pipe muscle does not relax. Working through the mouth, the endoscopist tunnels within the oesophageal wall and divides the tight muscle, with no cuts on the chest or abdomen. It is a form of third-space endoscopy.

What it involves
POEM is an alternative to surgical (Heller) myotomy and to repeated balloon dilatation. Suitability depends on tests such as manometry and endoscopy.
Your consultation and follow-up are at the clinic. This procedure needs specialised equipment, so the clinic will tell you where it is scheduled when you book.
When it is recommended
- Achalasia
- Other oesophageal spasm disorders, after assessment
Questions patients ask
Is POEM better than surgery for achalasia?
Both work well. The right choice depends on your type of achalasia, previous treatments and reflux risk. Dr. Mannava will discuss the options after your tests.
